Doris' Mum died in childbirth and she was fostered by their neighbours the Arnold family. Doris changed her name to Arnold when she was about 16 . She never forgave her father for not bringing her up and would have nothing to do with him even later in life when he tried desperatley to gain forgiveness. She even gave back the bequest he left her in his will.
